CSA Lanes – JTA Cross Crossing

Ezekiel Gobin

Ezekiel Gobin has been with JTA Supermarkets for nearly five years. At just 23 years old, this was his first job—and it’s been a valuable learning experience. Initially unsure about the industry, he’s since developed a genuine appreciation for the role and the fast-paced environment.

Ezekiel works primarily in the Alcohol lanes, a section he enjoys for the customer interaction and knowledge it offers. He’s learned how to recommend products like wines based on customers’ preferences, which adds a personal touch to the shopping experience.

His day involves much more than stocking—he rotates products, ensures safety protocols are followed, updates pricing displays, and even helps inform ordering decisions. Items like flour and rice are among the fastest-moving, and keeping up with demand is part of the challenge he enjoys.

He credits JTA with helping him grow—both in confidence and customer service. Now holding a more senior role, he makes a point of mentoring junior staff, remembering how others once guided him.

Outside of work, Ezekiel enjoys downtime with friends, gaming, and relaxing. His grounded approach and commitment to teamwork make him a valued part of the JTA Cross Crossing family

Interview

Get to know more about Ezekiel’s journey!

How long have you been working at JTA, and what made you interested in working in the supermarket industry?

I’ve been with JTA for about 4 to 5 years now. This is actually my first job, so I didn’t know much about the industry at the time. I’m 23 years old now, and over the years, I’ve grown to really enjoy the experience.

What does a day in the life of a CSA Lanes worker look like?

It’s much more than just stocking shelves. We rotate goods, follow safety protocols, ensure proper packaging, assist with ordering, and interact with customers, answering questions about product availability and specials. It’s a fast-paced and hands-on role that keeps us on our toes.

What section or type of products do you enjoy stocking the most, and why?

I’ve been working in the Alcohol lanes since my time at C3. I enjoy it because I’ve learned a lot about different types of drinks, customer preferences, and I can even help guide customers, like recommending dry or sweet wine options based on what they’re looking for.

Is there a particular product or aisle you feel like you can never restock fast enough because it’s always in demand? Why do you think that is?

Definitely the flour and rice lanes. These are everyday essentials that customers always buy, no matter the brand or type. And when they go on special, it’s non-stop. You can barely finish packing before the stock is flying off the shelves!

What’s something customers might not realize about your role?

There’s a lot more to it than people might think. We keep track of popular brands and fast-moving items, help update shelf talkers based on price changes, and even assist in placing orders. We also notice which items are performing well and which aren’t; it’s all part of staying informed and supporting the store’s operations.

How has JTA supported your work or growth over your employment period?

Being my first job, JTA has taught me a lot, especially how to interact with customers and understand their preferences. I’ve learned about product presentation, how to adapt to different people and situations, and the value of good customer service. It’s given me a new respect for how important this industry really is.

Where do you see yourself career-wise in the next few years?

Honestly, I’m not sure what the future holds just yet. I may or may not be here in five years, but I always make sure to give my best at work. I enjoy what I do, and that motivates me to keep improving.

Interview

Get to know more about Fanasir’s journey!

How long have you been working at JTA, and what inspired you to join the Prepared Foods department?

I’ve been with JTA for the past 8 years,6 of those at C3 Centre and the last 2 (and counting!) at Cross Crossing. I’ve always loved being in the kitchen, so when I was hired and given the option between the bakery and prepared foods, it was an easy choice. My heart’s in cooking, so I went with prepared foods.

Can you walk us through a typical day in your role?

Once I arrive, I start with prepping ingredients, and then I move into preparing breakfast. While that’s happening, I’m also getting lunch ready. Toward the end of my shift, I begin prepping for the next day so everything flows smoothly.

What skills or qualities do you think are important for someone working in this department?

You need to be friendly, a team player, and able to multitask because it’s a fast-paced environment. Of course, having cooking skills or at least some basic kitchen knowledge is also very important.

How do you ensure food quality and safety throughout the day?

I’m very mindful of using fresh ingredients and always taste the food to ensure quality. I make sure I’m properly dressed with a hair net, apron, and clean clothes and I work in a clean environment. Packaging and displaying the food properly is just as important for safety and appeal to ensure the customer gets the correct item.

How do you like to relax or spend your time outside of work?

I enjoy going to church, watching TV, relaxing, and spending time with my loved ones. I even go out with friends every now and then for a bit of fun and fellowship.

What’s your favorite dish or item to prepare, and why?

I never thought about this but it will definitely be stew chicken. I could probably make it with my eyes closed! I also love preparing red beans. I feel like I’ve mastered the color, taste, and consistency for both dishes, which makes me proud.

Do you have a go-to tip or secret ingredient that makes your food stand out?

Yes! I use a little baking powder to help tenderize meats and even dasheen bush if it’s a bit tough as it cooks down really nicely and adds a great texture and look to the dish.

How has JTA supported your growth or development on the job?

Working at JTA has helped me improve my cooking skills, especially when it comes to preparing meals for large groups. It’s also helped me come out of my shell. I used to be very reserved, but now I’m more open, social, and comfortable building relationships with both new and existing staff.

What’s a fun fact about you or a hobby your coworkers might not know about?

I’m a proud grandmother and absolutely love spending time with my grandkids, especially my grandson. We have a special bond, maybe that classic mother-son connection. He brings me so much joy.
